ST. LOUIS – Five Drake student-athletes were honored when the Missouri Valley Conference announced the 2013 Outdoor Track and Field All-Conference and Scholar-Athlete recipients.
Sophomores Steven Jordan (MacFarland, Wis.) and Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa), junior Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.) and fifth-year senior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) earned the honor for the men's team while Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) was the lone woman honored.
A total of 36 men and 43 women throughout the conference were named to this year's Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team. This honor is given to student-athletes who have maintained at least a 3.2 GPA, are a sophomore or higher in academic and athletic standing and placed in the top eight at the MVC Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field Championship. All grade-point averages were calculated through the 2012 fall academic semester.
Austin won the 5,000 meters at both the MVC indoor and outdoor championship in 2013 while earning a GPA of 3.68 while pursuing a double major in math and education.
Jordan and Wright both earned their academic honor through their hardwork in the classroom and participation on the 4x400-meter relay team that claimed a MVC title in 3:10.47. Wright holds a 3.4 grade-point average in chemistry.
Jordan maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA in pre-pharmacy studies and has been accepted into Drake's prestigious pharmacy program for his next four years of study. He was honored with the MVC's Elite 18 award for track and field which is given to the highest achieving student-athlete when combining athletic finish at the MVC Championship and cumulative grade-point average.
Lapham returned for a fifth year of competition and began working on a Master's degree in public administration, in which he earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. He was fifth in the mile and eighth in the 800 meters at the 2013 MVC Indoor Championships.
Yeager, the lone Bulldog on the women's team to be awarded the honor, was the 2013 MVC Champion in the 60-meter hurdles indoors and 100-meter hurdles during the outdoor season. She recently graduated with a degree in chemistry in which she owned a 3.27 GPA.
The Bulldogs also had 12 student-athletes earn a total of 14 All-MVC honors. Aside from the five scholar-athlete awardees, freshmen Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario), Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Scott Goad (Dixon, Ill.) and Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) were selected on the men's all-MVC team along with junior Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa). Senior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) also earned All-MVC honors for the women.
