EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) had a different feel as he watched the action at the NCAA Championships Wednesday night as the top track and field athletes in their country competed in preliminary heats at Oregon’s Hayward Field.

The past two NCAA Championships Twombly has just been a spectator at his home track, Drake Stadium, where the event was held in 2011 and 2012. This time around Twombly will be competing, having qualified for the men’s hammer throw.

“The experience so far has been phenomenal, the weather is great and I’m eager for the competition to start,” Twombly said.

Even before advancing to the NCAA Championships Twombly was already one of the most decorated throwers in Drake history. He became the first Drake thrower in modern history to reach the NCAA Indoor Championships and will do the same when he throws this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. CDT.

It’s been a phenomenal season for Twombly. During the indoor season he broke the Drake weight throw record three separate times, won the MVC title in the event and finished 14th at the NCAA Championships.

Twombly is looking to do much of the same this time around.

“This weekend, I hope to make the finals and throw a personal best,” Twombly said.

He threw his personal best of 205-03 at the 2013 NCAA West Region Preliminary Round that allowed him to qualify for the finals. The throw currently ranks 22nd in the nation. Each of the 24 competitors in the field will get three attempts and the top 12 will then have the opportunity for three more throws and the opportunity to win an NCAA championship.

While success and reaching the finals is very much Twombly’s goal, he is focused on soaking in the experience of competing in an NCAA Championship and putting the finishing touches on one of the best careers in Drake track and field history.

“Just being here, it is an honor in and of itself,” Twombly said “It’s just a phenomenal experience.”
