INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) will compete in the hammer throw at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA announced Monday with the release of the championship field.
Twombly's first throw will take place at 3:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, June 6 in Eugene, Oregon.
“I'm grateful to be going to the NCAA Championships,” Twombly said. “It's something I've only dreamed about and now that it is a reality, I'm pumped for what's ahead.”
This is the second NCAA Championships in a year for Twombly. In February he became the first thrower in Drake's history to compete for an NCAA Indoor Championship. His strong performance at the meet, where he finished 14th with a throw of 62-4.5, earned him second-team All-America honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Twombly becomes the first Drake thrower in the modern era to reach the outdoor finals. Jon DeGrave was the last Bulldog to compete in the championship, running the 400-meter hurdles in 2011.
Twombly's qualification didn't come easy. He needed a Drake record throw of 205-03 to secure the qualifying spot in last weekend's NCAA West Region Preliminary Round.
Twombly currently ranks 22nd in the nation in the hammer throw. Each of the 24 competitors will get three attempts and the top 12 will then have the opportunity for three more throws and the opportunity to win an NCAA championship.
Live results will be available through GoDrakeBulldogs.com and a live feed to all events will be linked as well.
