AUSTIN, Texas – The Drake University senior hurdle tandem of Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) and Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) qualified for the quarterfinals in the 100-meter hurdles Friday at the 2013 NCAA Track & Field Championship West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas.
Inclement weather and a wet track slowed down the times and athletes were forced to adjust their routines due to a more than three-hour weather delay as severe thunderstorms rolled through the Austin region.
Yeager sprinted to a top-15 finish with the 14th best time on the day of 13.77. She was third in her heat, with the winner, Brea Buchanan of UCLA recording the third-best time overall of 13.43.
Smith also ran in a fast heat and finished outside of the top three. However her time of 13.95 was the 22nd best in the event and allowed her to advance to the quarterfinals that are scheduled to start at 1:53 tomorrow.
Both student-athletes will be looking to top Smith's mark from a year ago where she reached the quarterfinals but was not able to advance further. In order to advance, each needs to finish in the top 12 of the tomorrow's quarterfinal heats.
Saturday's action will also see senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) attempt to qualify in the men's hammer throw that begins at 10 a.m. The event was rescheduled due to massive storms on Friday afternoon.
Senior Kevin Harp (Iowa City, Iowa) will also compete in his last regional, throwing the javelin at 2 p.m. Junior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) will be given another chance to qualify for the finals in the 5,000 meters, which will conclude events at 8:45 p.m. tomorrow night.
