Yeager Earns Second Hurdle Title of the Year at the 2013 MVC Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) claimed the 100-meter hurdles title to top a great day for the Drake women's track and field squad at the 2013 MVC Outdoor Championships Sunday at Drake Stadium.

“It feels pretty good,” Yeager said. “I'm pretty excited to be here in my home stadium to get that win, that was really exciting.”

The Bulldogs finished seventh in the team standing by collecting 41 points over the three-day event. Indiana State won the event overall with 166.5 points, edging Wichita State, who collected 165, with the title coming down to the last event of the day.

Yeager's victory in a time of 13.48 is the top mark on the season for Drake and a personal best. Yeager also won the 60-meter hurdles at the 2013 Indoor Championships in February. It is the second time in as many years that a Bulldog has won indoor and outdoor titles in the 60 and 100-meter hurdles as senior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) won both events last season.

Smith came in third in the event, running a time of 13.64. The race marked the last time Smith would run at Drake Stadium during her collegiate career.

“It felt good,” Smith said. “I'm happy to end on a high note. I'm happy with the way I ended it, I just wish I had another year.”

Yeager was also seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 101.89.

Senior Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa) scored some big points for the Bulldogs, making the finals in both the 200 and 400 meters. She was sixth in the 400 meters, running a personal best time of 55.20, and eighth in the 200 meters in 24.64.

Westrum's busy day continued by anchoring the 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.), Tiara Winston (Denton, Texas) and sophomore Ariel Kinlow (Brown Deer, Wis.) to a season best time of 46.25 and a fourth-place finish.

Yeager and freshman Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) joined Westrum and Cole to place sixth in the 4x400-meter relay. The team came from behind to move into sixth place in a time of 3:48.29.

Freshman Taylor Scholl (Prior Lake, Minn.) ran the top time for the Bulldogs in three different events on Sunday. She first ran a top-10 time in the 1,500 meters, crossing the line in 4:36.75 to place ninth. It was a personal best and the best time this season for a Bulldog.

Scholl also ran a personal best and the top 2013 mark for Drake in the 5,000 meters coming in at 18:00.20 in 17th. Fellow freshman Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) ran a personal best as well, clocking in right behind Scholl in 18th at 18:00.06.

Scholl was also eighth in the final of the 800 meters coming in at 2:16.17.

Cole, 11.94, and Winston, 12.13, were sixth and eighth respectively in the 100 meters.

Next up for the Bulldogs will be the NCAA West Regional Championship in Austin, Texas on May 23-25.
