CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Sparked by a third-place finish from redshirt sophomore Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa), the Drake men's golf team collected a fifth-place showing at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Tuesday (April 30) at the Dalhousie Country Club with a tournament score of 909 (301-308-300).
Leland carded a final-round 72 to garner All-MVC accolades on the strength of a 54-hole mark of 217 (68-77-72).
In the team standings, the Bulldogs came in one stroke behind Bradley, who posted a 908 tournament total, for fourth place.
“We really didn't lose or gain too much ground with our round today, but we were able to turn in a decent finish improving our final standing from a year ago,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “I'm extremely proud of Devin and his performance this week. His hard worked has paid off as he turned in an awesome tournament.”
Sophomore Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) registered a 73 over the final 18 holes to notch a tie for 14th place with a 227 (79-75-73) scorecard, which earned him top-18 flag honors.
Freshman Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) wrapped up his rookie campaign with a 78 to conclude his tournament in 31st place, with a 54-hole mark of 234 (77-79-78).
Juniors Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) and Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded of Drake's performances with scores of 238 (77-82-79=238/T-34th) and 241 (87-77-77=241/40th).
“I'm looking forward to next year with the majority of the team returning and adding some newcomers,” said Lewis. “Our performance this week is something to build upon for hopefully bigger and better accomplishments next season.”
The MVC Championship concluded the 2013 campaign for the Bulldogs.
