CLINTON, Iowa — The Drake Universty men's track and field team won seven events and scored 165 points to win the Ashford Spring Invite Saturday.
The Bulldogs received multiple victories from both junior Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) who won the 110 and 400-meter hurdles and participated in the 4x400 victory and senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) who claimed victory both in the discus and hammer throw.
"I liked what I saw today. Under windy conditions we made adjustments and performed well," Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown said. "While the veterans handled themselves well, it was fun to see our younger athletes have a good showing."
Marsh crossed the finish line in 14.65 in the 100-meter hurdles and 53.89 in the 400-meter hurdles for his two individual wins. He ran the second leg of the 4x400-meter relay with freshman Scott Goad (Dixon, Ill.), senior Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) and sophomore Ian Wells (Champaign, Ill.) that finished in 3:20.48.
Freshman Ali Jandal (La Crosse, Wis.) won the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:10.74. Freshman teammate Calvin Daack (Dubuque, Iowa) was third in 4:14.37.
Twombly's discus throw of 149-6 was five feet longer than second place finisher and teammate junior Andy Curtis (Manchester, Iowa). Curtis was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 175-5 while Twombly won with a throw of 198-5.
Drake had two other victories in field events, with freshman David Silkman (Leawood, Kan.) grabbing his first collegiate victory in the javelin with a throw of 163-3 and Karys winning the long jump with a jump of 23-3.5.
Goad was fourth in the long jump with a jump of 21-7.5 while junior Alex Kaster (Omaha, Neb.) cleared a distance of 21-0 to finish fifth. Goad also was fourth in the high jump reaching a mark of 6-4.75. Freshman Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo) also reached the mark and was fifth on misses.
Freshman Sean Buczek (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was second in the triple jump with a jump of 45-3.75. Kaster was third with a jump of 44-2.0.
On the track, sophomore Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) was second in the 400 meters with a time of 49.73. Freshman Zachary Elkins (St. Joseph, Ill.) was third in the 800 meters. His time of 2:03.07 was a second better than the fifth-place time of Jandal at 2:04.18 and the sixth-place finish by Daack in 2:05.10.
The team will return to Drake Stadium next weekend for the Jim Duncan Invitational.
