MONTEREY, Calif. - The Drake women's golf team carded
an opening-round 328 to sit second at its own tournament, the Monterey Bay
Invitational, on Sunday (March 17) at the Del Monte Golf Club.
The Bulldogs find themselves six
shots off the pace of USC Upstate, who leads the event after an opening-round
322.
"Our games are not
where we would like them to be, but to be in second place and in a position to
compete for the tournament title is exciting," Drake head coach Leanne Smith commented. "It seemed like
each player had a good nine holes and a bad nine today as nobody was able to
bring it together for a complete round. We're continuing to work on
consistency with Chelsey (Falk) and Danielle (Brooks) having led us today with
solid efforts."
Senior Chelsey Falk
(Glenwood, Minn.) paced the Bulldogs with a team-low 79 and is tied for third
place entering Monday's second round.
Sophomore Danielle Brooks
(Red Wing, Minn.) was two shots off Falk's pace with an opening-round 81, good
for a fifth-place tie.
Junior Hadley Jennings
(Trenton, Mo.) and freshman Katie Clausen (Hinton, Iowa) each recorded 84's to conclude their
rounds tied for 13th.
Redshirt freshman Kimmy Askelson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out
Drake's top five posting a score of 86 to place her in a tie for 27th.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Ashley
Brooks (Red Wing, Minn.) registered a 90, to stand in 32nd place.
Drake continues
competition at the Monterey Bay Invitational on Monday (March 18) starting with
a 10:00 a.m. CT shotgun start.
DRAKE RESULTS: Chelsey Falk (79/T-3rd), Danielle Brooks (81/T-5th), Hadley Jennings
(84/T-13th), Katie Clausen (84/T-13th), Kimmy Askelson (86/T-27th) and Ashley Brooks (90/32nd).
