ST. LOUIS - The
Drake men's track and field team was selected fifth in the 2013 MVC Indoor
Pre-Championship Poll, receiving 11 points in a vote by league coaches.
The men finished in the same
spot a year ago at the conference meet earning fifth overall with 74.50 points.
Junior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa)
ran the 5,000 meters in 14:24.88, becoming the first men's athlete at Drake to
win the event at the championships.
The Drake women are tabbed
to finish in seventh, given 18 points by the league coaches. The Bulldogs
finished in eighth last year with 20 total points. Senior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) led the charge, winning the women's
60-meter hurdles in 8.44, a personal-best and the second fastest time in school
history.
Indiana State and standout
sprinter Greggmar Swift led the men's poll, receiving five of the possible six
first-place votes and 35 points overall. Wichita State was picked to win the
women's side winning four of the eight first and 60 points overall. Indiana
State was a close second with three first-place votes and 58 points overall.
Action will take place at
the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa, beginning Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the
60-meter hurdles in the women's pentathlon.
