LOUIS, Mo. - Drake men's tennis
junior Robin Goodman (Cambridge,
England) and Kim Fortney of Southern Illinois have been selected as the Missouri
Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin
announced on Friday (Jan. 25).
Now in
its 14th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its
student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and
academic success in the classroom.
Goodman,
who maintains a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average in business management,
registered a pair of championships at the MVC Individuals last weekend en route
to sparking the Bulldogs to a school- and conference-record nine titles.
Goodman paired with senior Jean Erasmus
(Windhoek, Namibia) to earn an 8-6 decision past Alvaro Gutierrez and Matheus
Pereira of Wichita State at No. 2 doubles.
In
singles, he recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Erik Brunskog of Illinois State in the
No. 2 draw. The championships marked Goodman's second career crowns in both
singles and doubles, respectively, at the MVC Individuals.
On the season, Goodman
owns a 27-5 combined singles/doubles record, including a team-best 16-2 mark in
singles.
To
qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels,
student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed
at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore
in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not
eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be
evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
