Goodman Named MVC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Drake men's tennis junior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) and Kim Fortney of Southern Illinois have been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Friday (Jan. 25).

Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

Goodman, who maintains a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average in business management, registered a pair of championships at the MVC Individuals last weekend en route to sparking the Bulldogs to a school- and conference-record nine titles. Goodman paired with senior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia) to earn an 8-6 decision past Alvaro Gutierrez and Matheus Pereira of Wichita State at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, he recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Erik Brunskog of Illinois State in the No. 2 draw. The championships marked Goodman's second career crowns in both singles and doubles, respectively, at the MVC Individuals.

On the season, Goodman owns a 27-5 combined singles/doubles record, including a team-best 16-2 mark in singles.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
