What's Ahead: The Drake men's track and field squad
travels to Ames, Iowa this weekend (Jan. 18-19) at Iowa State Open. The meet begins
Friday at the Lied Recreation Center at 1 p.m. and will continues Saturday
morning.
Last Time Out: The men's track and field squad had
impressive showings in the jumps during the first meet of the season at the Cyclone
Holiday Preview (12/7/12). Scott Goad
finished second in the high jump with a mark of 6-8.75. He was followed by Jeff Foreman (Winfield, Ill.) in a tie
for sixth and Ryan Cook (Colorado
Springs, Colo.) in ninth. Both cleared 6-4.75 with Foreman finishing higher
with fewer misses.
Alex Kaster (Omaha, Neb.) finished third in the
triple jump with a mark of 45-6.50 with teammate Sean Duczek right behind him in fourth in 43-11.75.
The relay
squad of Ian Wells (Champaign, Ill.),
Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.), Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) and Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) combined for
a time of 2:18.23 to finish third in the 4x300-meter relay.
A Year Ago: The men's track and field squad
claimed three titles at the Iowa State Open (1/20/12) at the Lied Recreation
Center.
Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) won the seeded
3,000-meter race in 8:26.99, winning his first competition of the season.
Teammate Conor Wells (Des Moines,
Iowa) won the non-seeded 3,000-meter race in 8:58.57.
The
4x400-meter relay squad of Marsh, Karys, Jon DeGrave, and Shaun James won their
race in 3:15.57.
The Drake
men's distance medley "A" relay squad of seniors Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.), DeGrave, Matt Jurysta and Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) finished
second in 9:56.31.
Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) finished in
third in the weight throw with a heave of 57 feet and 1.5 inches.
Karys soared to 22-7.25 inches in the long
jump to finish fourth.
