The Drake University men's basketball team welcomes Wichita
State to the Knapp Center Wednesday evening for the Bulldogs' first Missouri
Valley Conference home game of the season. Tipoff at the Knapp Center is
scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Wichita State travels to Des Moines with a 12-1 record and a
1-0 start in the MVC after a 66-41 win over UNI on Sunday to open the
conference season. Meanwhile, Drake
dropped its MVC opener at Bradley, 67-57, to fall to 6-6 on the season.
Despite an off night from the field at Bradley, the Bulldogs
are one of the most accurate three-point shooting teams in the nation at 41
percent to rank second in the MVC and sixth nationally. Drake has made 10 or
more three-pointers in a game five times this season and twice in its last
three games.
Ben Simons leads Drake with 15 points per game and has
scored in double figures in all 12 games this season. In the loss at Bradley,
he hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with a team-high 13 points
for his first double-double. In last season's home game against the Shockers, a
93-86 triple-overtime thriller, Simon exploded for a career-high 29 points on
11-of-22 shooting.
The Bulldogs will need Simons and every bit of offense at
its disposal as Wichita State is holding opponents to just 57.2 points per game
and less than 40 percent shooting. No opponent has scored 70 points against the
Shockers this season, however Drake has scored at least 70 points in 11 of its
12 games.
Cleanthony Early is WSU's top active scorer with 13.3 points
per game on 44.9 percent shooting. Early had 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting with
six rebounds in Saturday's win over UNI as one of four Shockers in double
figures.
Following Wednesday's game, the Bulldogs remain home to host
Missouri State on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Bears are currently 3-10 this
season and 1-0 in the MVC. They travel to Evansville to face the Aces on
Wednesday evening.
