DES MOINES, Iowa – Joe Boyd, a 6-9 power forward from
Scottsdale, Ariz., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Drake
University men's basketball program, head coach Mark Phelps announced
Wednesday.
“We are extremely excited to announce the signing of Joe
Boyd, who will join us as a freshman at Drake in the fall of 2013,” head coach
Mark Phelps said. “He comes to Drake with demonstrated success, a proven
winning mentality and a talent level that will enhance our basketball program.”
Boyd is the top rated power forward prospect in the state of
Arizona where he is entering his senior season at Chaparral High School. A
three-star recruit according to scout.com, he missed his junior season due to
injury, but participated in the Reebok All-American Breakout Challenge this
past summer where he was rated as one of the top forward/centers at the event.
He is regarded by recruiting analysts as one of Arizona's
most skilled post prospects with a talented face-up game and the capacity to
play anywhere from the low block to the three-point arc. He is also considered
a strong and active rebounder that runs the floor and passes at a high level.
“Joe exemplifies the type of student-athlete we want to
recruit at Drake,” Phelps said. “He excels in the classroom and is a young man
of character and integrity that has a chance to make an immediate impact in our
program.”
