KANSAS
CITY, Mo. - Fueled by a final-round 74 from sophomore Dane Worley (Des Moines, Iowa), the
Drake men's golf team earned a 10th-place showing at the Bill Ross
Intercollegiate hosted by UMKC on Tuesday (Oct. 16) at the Minburn Golf and
Country Club.
"The guys were a little
disappointed today as we felt like we had an opportunity despite windy
conditions to put together a strong round," Bulldog head coach Matt Lewis commented. "We didn't have
any great scores, several solid to OK efforts, but what we need is one or two
guys to step up and go low and take charge of the team. I thought we were close,
but we just weren't able to capitalize on our putts."
Worley carved out a tournament mark of 225
(76-75-74=225) to finish tied for 28th, lowering his score each round to help
the Bulldogs to a 54-hole total of 904 (301-298-305).
"I thought Dane (Worley) played
well," said Lewis. "It was a good
first tournament for him this year."
Redshirt sophomore Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) matched
Worley's tournament effort, shooting an identical 225 (74-73=78) total.
One stroke off their pace was
junior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids,
Iowa), who registered a 54-hole mark of 226 (74-76-77) to wrap up the event
tied for 35th place.
Junior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) garnered a final-round 76 to conclude his
tournament tied for 49th place with a 228 (78-74-76) total. Sophomore Blake Huser (Altoona, Iowa) rounded out
Drake's contingent with a 233 (78-76-79) score, good for a 71st-place tie.
The Bulldogs close out their fall
campaign traveling to Powells, N.C., for the ODU/OuterBanks Collegiate
Invitational (Oct. 21-23).
