FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Drake men's golf team
concluded its stay at the Ram Master Invitational hosted by Colorado State with
an 11th-place finish among 15 teams at the Fort Collins Country Club on Tuesday
(Sept. 18), firing a final round 297 to register a 54-hole total of 893
(308-288-297).
"I thought we turned in a decent
tournament against a strong field, including beating a pair of MVC schools" Drake
head coach Matt Lewis commented. "I think we were one round away from turning
in a very solid tournament."
The Bulldogs found themselves in
the middle of a congested leaderboard where five strokes decided eighth through
11th places.
Freshman Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) carded a career-low 70 over the last
18 holes to lead the Bulldogs' efforts on the tournament's final day.
Redshirt sophomore Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) was Drake's
top finisher posting a 54-hole score of 221 (72-70-79) to tie for 28th place.
Junior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and sophomore Blake Huser (Altoona, Iowa) shot
identical 225 totals for the tournament to earn 47th-place showings. Steele turned in a 73 for the final 18
holes, while Huser signed for a 76.
Rounding out Drake's contingent was
junior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) with
a score of 233 (78-77-78=233/T-74th).
"Will (McDonald) played great
today shooting a solid 70," said Lewis.
"Connor (Steele) came through with a nice round firing a 73."
The Bulldogs return to action on
Sept. 26 with a 2:00 p.m. dual at Creighton.
DRAKE RESULTS: Devin Leland (72-70-79=221/T-28th), Connor Steele (80-72-73=225/T-47th), Blake Huser (78-71-76=225/T-47th), Will McDonald (85-75-70=230/T-67th) and Matt Ohl (78-77-78=233/T-74th).
