DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake women's tennis team capped a stellar debut to its fall season as the Bulldogs earned three doubles titles in first-day action at the Drake Fall Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
"The wins were nice for the girls, but we have a long way to go in order to become the team that I believe we can be," Drake head coach Paul Thomson commented. "It is a good starting point, however I'm looking forward to seeing how we develop from day-to-day and week-to-week this fall."
In the top doubles flight, the duo of freshman Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) and junior Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia) registered three victories capped by an 8-3 decision past Montse Fernandez and Rebecca Pedrazzi to claim the 'A' flight crown.
In the 'B' doubles draw, the tandem of sophomore Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior Ali Patterson (Overland Park, Kan.) posted a 3-0 record to earn the flight title with an 8-6 triumph over freshmen teammates Mariel Ante (Riverside, Calif.) and Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium).
Taking home the championship in the 'C' flight with a 3-0 mark was freshmen Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) and Lea Kozulic (Varazdin, Croatia). The Bulldog' pair dispatched Creighton's Taylor Koehrsen and Amanda Noonan in the final, 8-4.
In the lone singles match of the day, sophomore Amanda Dick (Kenosha, Wis.) dealt Sarah Boyd of Northern Illinois a 6-2, 6-0 setback.
Competition resumes at the Drake Fall Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 15) starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
