Kasey Griffith is entering her first season as the full-time assistant with the Drake softball team after spending the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach.

Griffith, formerly Schlafke, played three years at shortstop before moving to third base in her final season at SIUE. She graduated fifth all-time in career home runs at SIUE with 18, and started 182 games in her four seasons (2008-11).

“After two years of helping out I’m looking forward to having Kasey on our staff in a full-time capacity,” head coach Rich Calvert said of his newest assistant coach. “A life-long field rat, she has great passion and understanding of the game.

An excellent student, Griffith was named to the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll twice and to the Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Academic team once. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise and wellness.

“After finishing my playing career at SIUE, I knew I wanted to coach softball at the Division I level,” Griffith said. “Softball has and always will be a passion in my life so I was thrilled for the opportunity to volunteer at Drake. Over the last two years, I was able to learn under a great coach in Coach Calvert and see how he managed not only the on-field side of the program, but the academic and student-athlete development roles.”

Griffith was a multi-sport athlete at Dallas Center Grimes High School, where she earned all-conference, all-district and all-state honors in softball. Her head coach for softball was her dad, Steve Schlafke, a long-time, highly-successful local high school head coach.

“Now that I am a full-time staff member, I feel that I will be able to bring my passion, leadership and drive to this program and make a positive impact on the lives of the student-athletes,” Griffith said. “I want to thank Drake University and Coach Calvert for this tremendous opportunity and I look forward to starting.”

Griffith and her husband, Calvin, reside in Johnston, Iowa. The couple is expecting their first child in December.
