What's Ahead: The Drake women's track and field squad will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take part in the Jack Jennett Invitational. Combined events will begin on Friday, while the rest of the events will take place on Saturday.
Last Time Out: The Drake
women's track squad, in its first meet of the season with a full team, had a
successful meet last weekend at the Iowa State Open.
Freshman Mariel Fulton (Louisville, Colo.),
in her first meet of her Drake career, garnered a second-place showing in the
seeded 3,000-meters, timing in at 10:29.63.
Juniors Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) and Briana Isom-Brummer (St. Louis, Mo.) earned top-eight finishes in the finals of
the 60-meter hurdles.Yeager notched a sixth-place showing at 9.08, while
Isom-Brummer finished in 9.22 to place eighth.

relay team of juniors Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario), Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa), Yeager and Isom-Brummer was sixth in 3:57.96.
Junior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) had a time of 26.06 in the 200-meter dash to snare a
19th-place finish. Sophomore Tiara Winston (Denton, Texas) was 32nd in 26.92 in the event, which had 66 competitors.
In the distance medley relay, the Drake “A” squad of
freshman Melissa Parks (Norfolk, Neb.), Westrum, senior Kirsten Lake (Parker,
Colo.) and Fulton finished eighth in 12:28.68.
A Year Ago: Ari Curtis (Fort Collins, Colo.) won the pentathlon, while Tyse Samani took home the high jump crown and Marissa Smith won the 60-meter high hurdles for the Drake
women's track team at the Jayhawk Classic on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011
Competing in her first
pentathlon of the season, Curtis registered a score of 3,638 points. She won
the long jump and 800-meter sections of the competition.
Samani, for the second
week in a row, tied a personal best in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet
7-inches.
Marissa Smith won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.84, while Sarah Yeager was fifth in the finals running 9.10.
Casey McDermott nabbed second place in the 800-meter race with a time of
2:15.44.
Fellow seniors Katie Coomer and Kara McCartney were close behind McDermott in the 800 as they finished
third and fourth, respectively. Coomer was clocked in 2:15.21, while McCartney
ran in 2:18.35. Then-sophomore Cammy Dole (Anamosa, Iowa) was
sixth in 2:23.23.
Beth Hamling ran 25.41 in the 200-meter dash to register a second place
finish, the third-best showing in school history.
Whitney Westrum, in the first collegiate track meet of her career, finished 10th in
the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.40. Westrum, a former Drake Relays outstanding
high school girls performer, is also a standout on the Drake volleyball team.
Up Next: The Bulldogs will travel west to Lincoln,
Neb. to compete at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Feb. 3 and 4.
