NORMAN, Okla. - Displaying
a fighting spirit and tenacity down to the last rally, the Drake women's tennis
team battled against No. 25 Oklahoma, but in the end were unable to overcome the
Sooners on Saturday (Jan. 21) in dropping a 6-1 decision.
Oklahoma staked claimed to the doubles point sweeping all three
contests. The matches proved to be
closer than the final scores indicated as the Sooners capitalized on a few key unforced
errors by the Bulldogs en route to earning the point.
Junior Manca Krizman (Solkan,
Slovenia) accounted for Drake's lone victory of the afternoon overcoming
dropping the first set before rallying to register a 6-7 (6), 6-3, 10-8 decision
past Marie-Pier Huet at the No. 2 singles slot.
The Bulldogs nearly collected the triumph at the No. 6 position where senior
Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz,
Bolivia) battled Whitney Wofford.
After falling in the opening frame, 6-2, Aguilera won the tiebreaker in
the second set, 7-6 (5), before suffering a 10-8 setback in the third-set
tiebreaker.
Drake head coach Paul Thomson
lauded the efforts in singles play of senior Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions,
respectively, while also praising the collective opening-weekend performance of his team.
The Bulldogs open their home campaign next Saturday (Jan. 28) as Drake
hosts the Mid-America Jamboree Team Dual at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Bulldogs will face Northern
Illinois and SIU Edwardsville at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
