Dordel Throws First-Career No-Hitter, Drake Splits Friday Tilts
FRESNO, Calif. - Drake senior Brynne Dordel tossed her first-career no-hitter to lead the Drake University softball team to an 8-0, six-inning victory over Idaho State Friday (March 11) at the Bayer Crop Science Classic. Drake dropped a 12-5, eight-inning matchup with Troy earlier in the day to split its Friday slate.
Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) struck out eight and was a pair of walks away from a perfect game. The effort was her first no-hitter as a Bulldog and first overall since her junior year of high school.
Drake used seven hits and took advantage of five errors to spot Dordel an eight-run cushion against the Bengals. Senior Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) crossed the plate three times while sophomore Sam West (Kearney, Mo.) scored twice.
DeLong was the hard-luck loser in the opener after tossing six innings and allowing a single run on three hits. DeLong pitched into the seventh and allowed three runs. Dordel finished the game, tossing the seventh and the eighth and allowing eight runs on four hits to take the loss.
West tallied two runs on three hits to lead the squad offensively.
Drake carried a 5-1 lead into the seventh before ceding 11 runs in the final two frames.
The Bulldogs, 9-8 overall, have a rematch with Idaho State Saturday at 11 a.m. before taking on host Fresno State at 7 p.m.
