DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake University volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-12) victory over Southern Utah in the first game of day two of the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational.
The Bulldogs moved to 6-0 on the season, matching the 2008 and 1995 squads for the best start in the modern era (1995-present), and tying the third-longest win streak during the same time frame.
Senior Angela Bys tallied 13 kills, extending her all-time Drake kills record to 1,254. Bys has finished with double digit kills in all six Drake matches this season.
Drake grabbed a commanding lead in the opening game after starting the set with a 4-0 advantage. The Thunderbirds closed the gap to a one-point deficit, 6-5, but three kills by sophomore middle blocker Emily Heffernen (Manchester, Iowa) and three Southern Utah errors helped Drake spark a 16-3 run and earn a 21-8 lead. Heffernen finished the match with nine kills.
Senior Nicole Brown (Appleton, Wis.) ended the second set with a solo block, her first of the season, to give Drake a 25-18 victory.
The Bulldogs took a 25-12 victory in the third set. Senior libero Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa) tallied 24 digs during the match to pace all players. Junior setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) tallied a match-best 21 assists.
Southern Utah moved to 2-4 overall.
Drake caps off the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against North Dakota in a rematch of last week's North Dakota Classic championship that Drake won in five sets.
