SPRINGFIELD, MO. -
It was a tale of two halves for the Drake University women's basketball team,
Sunday, as the Bulldogs led Missouri State by 15 at halftime but fell 87-78
after a tough second half. Drake allowed 56 points in the closing half, the
third most points ever scored in a half by a Drake opponent. The loss snapped
Drake's seven-game winning streak against the Lady Bears.
Back-to-back threes by Jordann Plummer (St. Louis, Mo.)
and Amber Wollschlager (Millbank, S.D.) tied the game at 63 with eight minutes
remaining. The Lady Bears answered with a 10-0 run that gave them an 81-71
advantage with a minute to play. Junior Kristin Turk (Des Moines, Iowa) scored
Drake's final seven points, and led the team with a career-best-tying 24 points
on a personal-best seven-of-10 shooting from three point range.
Plummer finished the game with 19 points, her highest
offensive output since scoring 20 against Wichita State Jan. 9, 2010. The
senior added two steals, tying her with Stephanie Schmitz for fifth on the
all-time Drake steals list with 220. Wollschlager added 11, nine of which on
three pointers.
The Lady Bears opened the second half with a 15-2 run
that erased a 15-point Drake halftime advantage. The Bulldogs missed their first
six shots during the run and didn't make a field goal until Plummer hit a
runner in the lane at the 13:20 mark. A three by MSU's Busby three at 13:00
tied the game at 50.
Drake opened the first half with 10 unanswered points,
but ceded the lead at the 11:48 mark when Missouri State completed a 13-2 run.
With the Bulldogs down one, 20-19, and nine minutes left
in the half, Turk pulled off a five-point play to give Drake a four-point lead.
Turk hit a three-pointer, was fouled, missed the free throw, but grabbed her
own rebound and drained the putback to complete the play. The play accounted
for five of Turk's 17 first half points and one of her five three pointers and
helped spark a 15-2 Drake run highlighted by seven points from senior Monique'
Jones (Lee's Summit, Mo.). The run gave Drake a 46-31 lead at the half.
Drake fell to 11-10 on the season and 4-6 in the Missouri
Valley Conference. The Bulldogs host Evansville Feb. 11 at 7:05 p.m.
