WICHITA, KAN. - Wichita
State took advantage of three straight Drake turnovers to break away from a 59-59
tie in overtime en route to a 66-63 Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball
victory Friday night.
After a jumper by Jordann
Plummer (St. Louis, Mo.) tied the score at 59-59 with 4:02 left in overtime,
the Bulldogs committed turnovers on their next three possessions. A basket by
Morgan Boyd gave Wichita State a 61-59 lead it would never relinquish.
"I think defensively we played as well as we have this
season," Drake coach Amy Stephens said. "It's just unfortunate that they got
some key layups in those situations."
Plummer previously dropped in a two-footer to tie the
game at 55 with one minute remaining in regulation. Shocker guard Jessica Diamond
followed with a 15 footer to give Wichita State a 57-55 lead. Sophomore Rachael Hackbarth (Colgate, Wis.) hit a
lay-in with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 57. Plummer stole the ball from
Diamond at halfcourt with seven seconds left to set up the final play of
regulation, but Drake's in-bound play to forward Stephanie Running (Oak Creek, Wis.), fell short to force the
overtime period.
"She [Running] had four huge points in go-to situations,"
said Stephens, whose Drake overtime record fell to 5-6. "I thought she did some
good things."
Hackbarth paced Drake with 16 points and 12 rebounds; her
second career double-double.
The Bulldogs extended a solid 45-37 lead during the first
11 minutes of the second half, but Wichita State scored eight points in a
single minute to cut the Drake lead to one, 45-44, with eight minutes
remaining. Sheena Johnson's pair of free throws at the 7:53 mark, Wichita State's
first of the game, captured the Shockers' first lead, 46-45, since the
11-minute mark in the first half.
Drake grabbed a 5-4 lead at the 16-minute mark of the
first half, but Wichita State used a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to
take a 16-5 lead with 11 minutes left. The Bulldogs battled back with help from
a pair of baskets by Brittnye McSparron
(Apple Valley, Minn.) to regain the lead, 22-21, with 5:45 remaining in the
half.
A three by Amber Wollschlager (Milbank, S.D.) with 38 seconds remaining broke a five-minute
scoring drought for Drake and a buzzer-beating shot by Plummer gave the
Bulldogs a 27-25 lead at halftime. Drake
was outrebounded 10-4 during the contest's first eight minutes, but outboarded
the Shockers 12-7 during the half's closing 12 minutes.
Drake fell to 11-9 on the season, 4-6 in the MVC. The
Bulldogs travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State Sunday at 2:05
p.m.
