LAST TIME OUT - DRAKE
82, CHICAGO STATE 60 11/18/09
DES MOINES, IOWA --
The Drake University women's basketball team earned its first win of the
season with an 82-60 victory over Chicago State. Senior Jordann Plummer
(St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points on
eight-of-13 shooting while chipping in five steals and four rebounds.
Junior guard Kristin Turk (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln)
tallied 13 points and a career-high three steals in the winning effort.
Sophomore Brittnye McSparron (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) also totaled
13 points after dropping 11 in the first half.
Plummer and McSparron were the story in the first half,
combining to shoot 11-of-16 from the floor and score 24 of Drake's 50 first
half points. Chicago State played close during the opening minutes and led by
six in the eighth minute, but seven quick points by Plummer and a pair of free
throws from freshman Kayla Person (O'Fallon, Mo./Incarnate Word) gave
Drake a three-point advantage at the 11 minute mark. A contested layup from
redshirt sophomore Morgan Herrick (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) gave the
Bulldogs a lead they did not relinquish.
Drake shot a solid 48 percent from the floor, including an
even 30 percent from three-point range. A 10-turnover difference between the
two teams was key as Drake forced 27 Cougar turnovers in the contest. The
Bulldogs won the battle down low, pulling down 36 boards to Chicago State's 29
and outscoring the Cougars 36-24 in the paint.
Drake scored 20 fast break points compared to zero for
Chicago State.
