NORMAN, OKLA. - The Drake
women's tennis team posted a 3-1 mark in qualifying round play at the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional hosted by the
University of Oklahoma on Wednesday (Oct. 21).
Sophomore Jessica Aguilera
(Santa Cruz, Bolivia) advanced to the main singles draw with a pair of
victories in qualifying round play.
Aguilera first bested Emily Whitney of Southern Illinois, 6-1, 6-4,
before downing Oklahoma State's Leyla Simmons, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Ali Patterson
(Overland Park, Kan.) came up short in her bid to join Aguilera in the main
draw dropping a 6-7 (2), 6-2, 10-4 decision to Jenny Nalepa of Saint
Louis. Patterson had opened
competition with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Jessica Flannery of Southern
Illinois.
Main draw action gets underway on Thursday (Oct. 22) as the tandem of sophomore
Gabriela Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.)
and freshman Manca Krizman (Solkan,
Slovenia) and the duo of Patterson and sophomore Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) will compete in doubles play
for the Bulldogs. In singles
competition, Aguilera, Krizman and Demos will take the court representing
Drake.
