IOWA CITY, IOWA - The Drake softball team opened play at the Big Four Classic on Saturday (Sept. 26), dropping a 4-2 decision to Iowa before defeating Northern Iowa, 8-7.
In the opener against the Hawkeyes, junior catcher Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) gave Drake a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run double. After Iowa tied the game, the Hawkeyes hit a two-run walk-off home run for the 4-2 victory.
The battery of junior pitcher Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) and Mollohan went the distance for Drake.
In the nightcap, a walk-off home run by freshman infielder Macie Silliman (Winterset, Iowa/Winterset) gave Drake the 8-7 victory.
Junior pitcher Mandy Osborn (Blair, Neb./Blair) went the distance from the mound and collected two hits for the Bulldogs, while senior outfielder Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa/West) added two hits.
Mollohan caught the first three innings and sophomore Rose Magaddino (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) caught the final four innings.
Drake closes out tournament play on Sunday (Sept. 27) against Iowa State. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
