DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake
women's tennis team captured four singles titles on the final day of the Drake
Fall Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 16) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center to
raise the Bulldogs' weekend title haul to eight.
"This weekend was a good start for a very young team, but it is just a
start," Drake head coach Paul Thomson
commented. "We have a great idea
now of what we have to work with, but also what need to work on. I saw some improvements day-to-day and hopefully, we can build on
this next weekend at Illinois State."
Garnering her second title on the weekend in the 'B' singles draw was sophomore Nell Boyd
(Arlington Heights, Ill.), who bested Montse Fernandez from Wichita State, 6-2,
6-4.
Capturing her first career Drake Fall
Invitational championship in the 'C' singles flight was freshman Mariel Ante (Riverside, Calif.), dispatching
Mary Malkin of Northern Illinois, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshmen Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) joined Boyd with her second title on
the weekend after registering a 6-2, 6-1 decision over senior teammate Ali Patterson
(Overland Park, Kan.).
Freshman Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) made it three double-winners
for the Bulldogs recording a 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-1 triumph past Amanda Noonan of
Creighton in the 'F' singles draw.
Drake resumes its fall campaign traveling to Normal, Ill., for the
Redbird Invitational next Friday (Sept. 21) through Sunday (Sept. 23).
