2011 Drake Football Media Day

Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011

High expectations and a sense of unity were consistent themes expressed throughout the Drake football team's annual Media Day, held Tuesday at Drake Stadium.

Many players spoke of the close bond they share with their teammates after the team's history-making trip to Tanzania in May to play in the Global Kilimanjaro Bowl. The journey included dozens of hours performing significant service projects in Arusha and Moshi and a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

They also spoke of the sense of balance this team has after being a defense-dominated team in years past. There is a feeling the offense has raised its level to that of the defense, with 10 starters returning, including third-year starter Mike Piatkowski (Wheaton, Ill.) at quarterback.

The challenge defensively will be to replace FCS All-America defensive end Dain Taylor. Fourth-year head coach Chris Creighton believes he has a strong enough core group of players along the defensive line and in the linebacking corps that the whole can be greater than the sum of the parts.

After four days of fall camp, with its lengthy meetings, video and practices, the players seemed to enjoy the opportunity to break from the routine and show some personality while having fun in front of the cameras.

The Bulldogs kick off the 118th season of Drake football on Thursday, Sept. 1, at North Dakota. The first home game is set for Sat., Sept. 10, vs. Grand View at Drake Stadium. For tickets call (515) 271-DOGS or visit www.GoDrakeBulldogs.com.
