DES MOINES, IOWA - Drake seniors Lindsay Whorton (Independence, Mo./Truman) and Jill Martin (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) were tabbed as ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII women's basketball team honorees, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday (Feb. 7).
Whorton was selected as a first team recipient for the second consecutive year, while Martin garnered second team accolades for the first time in her distinguished career.
An English and education double major, Whorton boasts a 4.00 grade point average, while Martin, an elementary education major, maintains a 3.35 GPA.
A native of Independence, Mo., Whorton has started all 20 games for Drake and is averaging 14.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
She is ranked third in the Missouri Valley Conference in three-point field goals made (2.40), fourth in scoring (14.8) and 15th in assists (2.55). In conference-only tilts, she sits third in three-point field goals made (2.11), 11th in scoring (13.9) and 13th in assists (2.78).
She is tops in school history in three-pointers (243) and has posted 16 double-figure scoring games this season, including three of over 20 points.
Hailing from Norwalk, Iowa, Martin has started 95 consecutive games in which she has appeared, including all 20 this season and is averaging team-highs in scoring (17.2) and rebounding (8.4).
She leads the MVC in scoring and defensive rebounds (6.95), while sitting second in rebounding, fourth in free throw percentage (.847) and 13th in three-point percentage (.357). In league-only affairs, she is ranked first in defensive rebounds (7.78), second in rebounding (8.7), fourth in scoring (16.3) and 15th in both free throw percentage (.750) and three-pointers made (1.33). Nationally, Martin is 32nd in free throw percentage.
To be eligible for nominations to the CoSIDA Academic All-American team, nominees must own a cumulative GPA of 3.20 based on a 4.0 scale.
Whorton now advances to the national ballot where she will be eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be released on Feb. 28.
The Bulldogs host Creighton on Saturday (Feb. 9). The contest begins at 11:02 a.m. in the Knapp Center and will be telecast live by ESPNU.
