ST. LOUIS, MO. ? The Missouri Valley Conference announced Monday (Nov. 26) that Drake senior Jill Martin (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) has been selected as the State Farm/MVC Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Martin fashioned a masterful week with back-to-back double-doubles averaging 27.0 and 13.0 rebounds in two games for the Bulldogs at the SMU Hoops for the Cure Classic in Dallas, Texas.
In two games, she shot 41.7 percent from the field, 44.4 percent beyond the arc and 95.2 percent at the free throw line en route to all-tournament laurels.
She registered a 27-point, 14-rebound effort in a 69-64 loss to Kansas on Friday (Nov. 23), posting 16 points and seven rebounds in the final 20 minutes. She was 17-for-18 at the charity stripe in the contest, to set new career highs in free throw attempts and makes.
Martin displayed a knack for hitting the key shot against the Jayhawks as she helped Drake rally from a 64-58 deficit with 1:36 remaining in the contest. She connected on four straight free throws to cut the lead to two, 64-62, with 52 ticks left on the clock and followed with a key jumper to bring the Bulldogs to within one, 65-64, with 16 seconds remaining in the affair
She was equally spectacular versus Western Michigan on Saturday (Nov. 24) in her 100th career contest recording 27 points and 12 rebounds to post her 28th career double-double and third straight 20-point effort. She went 10-for-20 from the field and equaled a career best making 4-of-6 three-point attempts, while also matching a career high in field goals made in a single game.
With her 12 rebounds against WMU, she became the eighth player in school history with at least 1,400 career points and 750 career rebounds.
On the year, she is averaging 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per night, while shooting 47.4 percent from beyond the arc and 41.5 percent from the field.
The Bulldogs (3-3) return to action this Sunday (Dec. 2) hosting Montana State at 2:05 p.m.
